Job Description: he Commonwealth Secretariat seeks to appoint Economic Adviser, International Development Policy, with our Economic, Youth and Sustainable Development (EYSD) Directorate. The Economic Social and Sustainable Development Directorate is responsible for the Secretariat’s programmes work on global, regional, and national economic issues, both contemporary and emerging, and on small states. The successful candidate will be responsible for taking forward the Section’s work in collaboration with the Head of Section on debt issues, and issues related to financing for development. The post holder also has a role in the monitoring and assessment of developments in the global economy on Commonwealth countries and contributing to G20 policy development work of the section and Finance Ministers Meetings. The post-holder will be required to have a mix of skills including knowledge of the complex international economic issues of current interest and a willingness to learn new skills. The post holder will take forward the Secretariat’s advocacy and work on international development policy; have specific responsibility for undertaking and managing policy research and analysis as required; write briefs/reports/blogs, as necessary, on developments in the world economy, and on general economic and development policies pertinent to Commonwealth member states, as required, as well as contribute to other publications of the Section; contribute technical and other support to assist with delivery of various meetings; collaborate across Directorates to deliver cross-cutting work on issues with relevance to the Economic Policy and Small States Section; assist in preparing briefs and speaking notes for the division and for senior management; build new partnerships with international organisations and support the Section Head in preparing sectional budgets and work plans.
Requirements: To be considered, you will have a post-graduate degree in Economics, with sound quantitative, analytical and writing skills, or a relevant Post-Graduate degree with strong technical Economic components, and proof of sound quantitative, analytical and writing skills. You will also have at least seven years of experience in economic analysis and policy formulation and financing for development at a senior level in a government, international financial institution or research organisation (including NGO); and extensive experience of working in (or on) developing countries.
