Job Summary: Seeking a seasoned COO for East Africa to implement plans and oversee operations.
Job Description: The Foundation plans to grow rapidly over the next few years and is looking for a seasoned COO for East Africa to help implement its plans and oversee its operations. Position Initially based in Addis Ababa and reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Chief Operating Officer, East Africa is a key member of the management team whose goal is to secure the functionality of the business to drive extensive and sustainable growth. The COO is responsible for managing a comprehensive array of regional services and programmes. The COO will lead country and regional directors and numerous programme models across several sites with a programme staff of currently 40. S/he will monitor the services being offered and develop new programmes as needs emerge. S/he will be responsible for all East Africa operations including finance and human resources. The COO will inform the CEO, and ultimately the board of directors, of all programme issues and accomplishments. The COO will also be responsible for all programme planning, organising, operating, and staffing. S/he is responsible for developing and managing the programme aspects of the annual budget in conjunction with the Chief Financial Officer and CEO. S/he is responsible for ensuring that the Foundation fulfills its mission and that its activities comply with all local regulations and requirements. Finally, the COO will assist the CEO in planning and implementing future strategic partnerships. Responsibilities • Provide effective and inspiring leadership, as well as stewardship, by being actively involved in all programmes and services. • Implement and lead a continuous quality improvement process throughout the programme and service areas that focuses on internal monitoring and evaluation • Lead a high performing team to the next level by further developing and implementing recruitment, training, and retention strategies. • Partner with the CEO to represent the Foundation with external stakeholders, including community, governmental, and private organisations. • Ensure all programme activities operate consistently, legally and ethically within the mission and values of the Foundation. • Prepare and submit an annual operational plan and budget to the CEO for review and approval, manage effectively within this plan and budget, and report accurately on progress made and challenges encountered. • Ensure the continued financial viability of the Foundation’s programme/service units through sound fiscal management. Provide programmatic leadership and input for all strategic planning processes with the CEO and staff.
Requirements: • At least 10 years of professional experience overall, with a minimum of five years of senior-leadership experience supervising seasoned staff operating multiple activities in the for- profit and not-for-profit sector across a broad geography. • An entrepreneurial leaning and successful private sector experience strongly preferred. • Solid educational background including an undergraduate degree and an MBA or similar advanced degree. • Strong familiarity with Africa and its diverse needs and cultures with an emphasis on East Africa. • Strong relationship builder and communicator with experience leading diverse work teams, developing an organisation-wide strategy for programme excellence, engaging community partners, and partnering with a CEO and board of directors. • Demonstrates integrity, strives for excellence in her/his work, and has experience of leading others to new levels of effectiveness and programmatic impact. • Passionate about the Foundation’s vision and mission and able to promote and communicate the philosophy, mission and values of the Foundation to external and internal stakeholders. • Ability to travel 50 percent of the time to provide on-site leadership for multistate operating units and programmes. • A willingness to relocate to Addis Ababa and then eventually to Nairobi to oversea all Foundation activities in East Africa.
