The Africa Tax Symposium is an annual authoritative event, drawing together tax professionals from all over the continent. The aim of the Symposium is to analyse the most pertinent international tax issues of the day and to place them within the African context. This is reflected in the signature theme, Trends in International Taxation: An African Perspective.
Building on the success of the inaugural Symposium, this year’s event will focus on today’s burning tax issues, such as the post-BEPS landscape, aggressive tax planning, transfer pricing and challenges impacting particular industries and transactions. These topics will be brought to life by a rich selection of renowned tax experts. The Symposium presents a wide range of speakers from tax practice, industry, revenue authorities and academia. This compelling mix is enriched even further by IBFD’s top experts on Africa.
The Africa Tax Symposium is an initiative of IBFD’s Centre for Studies in African Taxation (CSAT), a think tank devoted to the study and development of African taxation. Through the Symposium, CSAT aims to contribute to deeper and more analytical knowledge of international tax across the continent. CSAT also sponsors research into areas of tax policy relevant to particular sectors in Africa. One way of effecting this is by means of “CSAT scholarships,” under which qualifying researchers receive sponsorship for pertinent research work. CSAT has just concluded arrangements for several such scholarships and full details will be unveiled during the Symposium.

The commercial conditions in today’s oil and gas industry are encouraging much fresh thinking in companies about new business models. Many are reconsidering the traditional ways in which the industry has operated over the past century. Among the most interesting developments is the new focus on creating greater value by making far greater use of the skills, experience, and initiative of national workforces. Not only can this make much more economic sense for the oil and gas companies, it can significantly enhance the potential for development by the oil producing countries involved.
There is now a new common motivation: the need to produce oil and gas at much lower prices means both companies and governments have a mutual interest. The companies need local skilled and experienced employees a tenth of the cost of expatriates. Getenergy believes that governments need to see greater value from their ownership of their natural resources. This value comes from having more people employed in skilled jobs by the companies and in seeing much greater participation by nationals in the oil and gas supply chain. And, ultimately, in creating a skilled and educated population that will ensure the nation’s prosperity after the oil and gas is over.
The industry is not standing still. There are a number of new initiatives, including education industry partnerships, which are beginning to address these challenges. These will be on display at Getenergy’s Global event where the main theme of this unique international gathering of oil and gas companies, services companies, universities, colleges, governments and training companies will be how to make these relationships work to the great mutual interest.

In the early 1980s Jamaican popular music underwent a paradigm shift with the emergence of a new musical style: dancehall. Conventional reggae song-writing and production techniques were traded-in for light-hearted boasting over digital ‘riddims’, with humour and ‘slackness’ the order of the day. A quiet and observant newspaper cartoonist called Wilfred Limonious (1949–1999) became one of the primary visual architects of this movement. Explore the career and the international impact of an unheralded Jamaican graphic designer and national treasure through art, music and photography. Signed copies of the book ‘In Fine Style: The Dancehall Art of Wilfred Limonious’ (One Love Books) will be available on the day. Led by cultural historians Christopher Bateman and Al ‘Fingers’ Newman.

Many African cultures promote innovation, actively shaping their role on the global stage. In the past decade, such initiatives have created steady economic growth, significant improvement in health and education and remarkable changes in political structures in many African nations. Ensuring the sustainability of the rich resources, cultures, and political structures Africa has to offer defines a leading edge of these transformations. At the same time, all three concepts ask to be critically analyzed. Their potential to inspire effective action has been matched by their proven potential for co-optation by external or internal forces.
The inaugural joint conference of the American Anthropological Association and African Studies Association, will present an interdisciplinary occasion to focus research attention on these transformations as they relate to Africa’s future. Hosted in Dakar by the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) and the West African Research Center (WARC), the conference will itself model innovation and creativity in its presentation formats and its location.

These fundamental changes are stimulating a growing body of research and publication on the topic of newly emergent urban spaces. Read more here.
