Dear Editor
Thank you for this interesting and somewhat thought provoking article, Frances. However, I do beg to differ on a couple of points; one, I think the age of parents beating their children “into submission” if they decide they don't want to go to Uni is long gone, and we would do well not to stereo-type African parents in this way. Many are modern professional people, who, although may still feel Uni degree is the route to a successful career etc, will not resort to physical violence to force their children through this route. The other issue is that, I still believe the best chance of success in this competitive and increasingly globalised world we live in, is getting hold of at least one Uni degree. Working in a store, customer service, and care work is not what most aspiring African parents want for their children, especially in the western world where being African and black means you have to be twice as good, in order to be in equal footing as your white peers. It is right that we should continue to motivate and inspire our children and young people at an early age to aim for the best educational opportunities in life in order to make the best chances and choices for themselves. Granted that not everyone will achieve their aims, but they should still aim high!
