4-6 October - Agents of Fear: Launch of an Amnesty International Report on Sudan, Chatham House, London.

This event will launch an Amnesty International Report which argues that human rights violations, including secret detention and torture, have created a climate of fear in Sudan. The report details how human rights defenders, political dissidents, students and members of ethnic minorities continue to be arbitrarily arrested and detained. Chief among the agents of government repression is the National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS), whose members have immunity from prosecution for all crimes committed in the course of their work.

The report illustrates the human rights violations committed by the NISS in Sudan, and the extensive powers and immunities the NISS continue to enjoy under the new 2010 National Security Act. It calls on the Government of Sudan to reduce the powers and immunities of the NISS, to put an end to human rights violations, to bring perpetrators to justice and to ensure that victims have redress.

The speakers will discuss the report's findings. Entry to these expert meetings is restricted. Experts and interested individuals should apply via the email address below. Only receipt of a confirmation email from Chatham House allows entry to meetings.

Places are limited & Chatham House reserves the right to restrict access to any of its meetings without notice or explanation. Attendees may be required to present photo identification at any time. Access to these meetings for corporate supporters of the Africa programme as listed below is free, access to non-sponsoring profit making entities may be restricted or subject to a fee. More information supplied on application to attend.Unless otherwise stated, if you would like to apply to attend any meeting please email Tighisti Amare at tamare@chathamhouse.org.uk stating your name and affiliation.

To mark the 50th Anniversary of Nigerian Independence, Oval House Theatre proudly presents Omo London*, a short season of work examining the identity, heritage, and legacy of Nigerian communities in the UK. The festival consists of one main full length play, three play readings and a debate.

The main festival production is the full debut production of Arinze Kene's, ESTATE WALLS, directed by Ché Walker. The play is set in an inferior London estate and follows the story of Obi, a young writer who dreams of leaving. Told through rich, witty and lyrical street language, the story focuses on the young artist's conflict between his ambitions and his loyalty to his friends.

These three plays, EGUSI SOUP by Janice Okoh, FIXER by Lydia Adeunji and PANDORA'S BOX by Ade Solanke, explore both the experience of Nigerians in the UK and the contemporary relationship between Nigeria and Great Britain.

14-15 October – OTL Africa Downstream, Lagos, Nigeria

The OTL Africa Downstream Expo is the biggest gathering of downstream petroleum operators in Africa. Now in its fourth year, OTL Africa Downstream has grown to become the principal knowledge, brand and business development tool for companies and organisations doing business in or with the downstream petroleum market. It operates through an elaborate conference and exhibition, bringing hundreds of industry-specific speakers, delegates, exhibitors and visitors through two days of brain-storming, trading, networking and business match-making.

Downstream petroleum business in Africa is going through a critical transformational period. After the price-volatile and often challenging years of 2009 and 2010, the calming markets have caused operators to reappraise the markets and reposition for increased competition, efficiency and profit. Regulators are also keen to ensure past mistakes are avoided. Petroleum products? appetite by key nations across the continent has not abated, thereby driving a strong, active and increasingly sophisticated downstream petroleum market.

Governments and national oil companies maintain a desire for petroleum products? self sufficiency, thereby ensuring that refining, despite its challenges, remains a primary concern. Entrepreneurial and investor interest is also robust on petrochemicals, with lubricants, synthetic rubber, plastics, fertilizers, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, natural gas and propane all potentially poised as leading investment options.

All these and more come together at the OTL Africa Downstream Expo 2010, in a riveting confluence of knowledge, networks, business and rewards.
