"Dear Editor
Good piece on need for home grown, indigenous development in Africa. That is why the picture of an African thatch-roofed village side by side with a concrete jungle of skyscrapers worries me...."
Dear Editor
When praising the works of these great people, don't forget those who died in the cause - Steve Biko comes to mind. Well done on a site that is growing well.

Dear Editor
Halala Madiba : Hail Mandela
He suffered like a caged bird. Released. Flew over and soared. Breaking the chains. Now we know the rest. Halala Madiba.

Good piece on need for home grown, indigenous development in Africa. That is why the picture of an African thatch-roofed village side by side with a concrete jungle of skyscrapers worries me... is this the spirit of what we in the Diaspora should be trying to do - raze down our villages for concrete jungles; push aside our indigenous foods for fast food chains, etc. etc? Perhaps I have missed a point in your brilliant expose?
Editor’s Note: I take your point that the picture suggests transformation should result in skyscrapers and modern luxuries. But how many of us in the Diaspora would find it comfortable to live in the thatch-roofed village for any length of time without running water, electricity and what we have become to see as the essentials of life? Perhaps the answer lies in finding a balance where we preserve what is uniquely ours while ensuring that our villages do not present barriers to the comfort, health and development of their inhabitants?
