Dear Career Coach
Due to so many changes in my company, I am really worried that I could lose my job and want to move on before this happens. The market that I work in is going through some difficult times and I really need advice on how I can stand out, with so many others like me facing job cuts.
Ellis, London
Dear Ellis
Given the current market conditions and the impact of the ‘credit crunch’ on London’s businesses and, in particular, on your market sector, many companies are taking a hard look at their finances and cutting back on staff. While businesses still need to operate and good skills are always going to be in demand, in this buyers’ market, you are going to need to be much more proactive in how you approach the job market.
Start now to use your network of former employers, colleagues, friends and alumni to help you get the word round that you are looking for a new role. Networking does not guarantee you a job but it can help to get you in front of people who have the ability to hire. With the increase in web-based social networking sites, it is also now possible to reach a wide network of people in your industry.
Networking effectively can also get you into some informational interviews. Although, in this case, the company may not be ready to hire, it will give you a chance to get some interview practice and to let them know how you can help their business when the time is right.
If you haven’t already done so, register with a select number of recruitment agencies and try to get a sense of where opportunities still exist within your sector. Don’t expect the recruiter to look for jobs for you – their role is to fill vacancies that companies have lodged with them. Instead, consider how you can re-package your skills and redo your CV and cover letter to meet the job roles now in demand. Always keep your CV up-to-date and relevant to the skills needed for the jobs that you are now targeting.
Research some of the internet job boards that relate to your sector and post a job profile for the types of jobs you are looking for. Finally, get out there and attend any relevant careers fairs that will give you a chance to meet new employers.
All the best!
