I have submitted my CV to a vast number of recruiters and received very little response. Please tell me, is it my CV or what? Please help!

Thank you for your e-mail. Having reviewed the CV you sent me and which you have been sending out for jobs, I would like to offer you some feedback and advice, as this may also be useful for other readers.

I have to say that reading through your CV, it was very hard to find the key information about what you do and the kind of role you are therefore seeking.

The key point you need to remember with a CV is that it is first and foremost a means to market your skills and experience to a specific company/role/recruiter.  It is not simply a list of everything that you have done but a document that carefully highlights your achievements and successes in a way that makes you appear to be a very strong candidate for whichever role is on offer.

In putting together a great CV that will have a strong impact on the recruiter reading it, do bear the following points in mind:

  • Aim to keep your CV to a maximum of 2 pages, keeping the focus on your skills, experience and achievements.  For those just starting on their career, a one page CV will suffice.
  • If you do include a profile or objective on your CV, ensure it is one that is in keeping with the job you are applying for. It often helps to have a profile/objective statement if you are seeking a career change or if your CV does not make clear what you do and the kind of role you are seeking

  • Keep personal details to a minimum - contact details at the top of the CV and details such as nationality at the end of the document will suffice. You do not need to name or list your spouse and children on your CV. If an employer needs these details they will request them once an offer is made/accepted
  • Do not include courses and just state 'unfinished'. If you didn't complete a course, unless for a very good reason or if the part-qualified status is useful, there is no need to flag this up to an employer.
  • Set out your work experience in chronological order, starting with your current or most recent role.
  • Avoid listing your job description or, worse, single words, under your job title. This is your opportunity to describe key achievements that reflect the skills and experience the employer is seeking. Think about the projects, activities, responsibilities you have undertaken and identify those that are relevant to the kind of role you are applying for. Use strong words such as 'Led', 'Managed', 'Directed', 'Undertook', 'Key part of a team responsible for...',.
  • Achievements are all about how you made an impact, so include information about your successes e.g. in increasing customers, reducing costs, bringing in innovations, training and managing staff, managing budgets or projects, and so on.
  • State your qualifications briefly and add any relevant additional training or certification.  If it has nothing to do with the role and offers no real interest to the potential employer, leave it out.

You do not say whether you have been submitting a cover letter with your CV but doing so, when possible, will also gives you the opportunity to highlight how your skills and experience make you a great candidate for the position you are applying for, and how hiring you will benefit the organisation you are applying to.

All the best!
