Job Description: The Senior Media Officer leads ODI’s media engagement and is responsible for ensuring that our evidence and ideas reach wide, diverse and influential audiences. This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled media professional with a strong news sense, experience of working on both proactive and reactive media, and an understanding of the broader current affairs landscape to grow our global coverage. We are seeking a motivated self-starter – with a keen eye for detail and the ability to think on their feet – who can pitch our research with credibility to high profile outlets in the UK, across Europe and internationally. Main Duties and Responsibilities Lead ODI’s media work, including the formulation, delivery and evaluation of ODI’s media strategy and plans. Strengthen ODI’s engagement with key media outlets and correspondents in the UK, Europe and globally to increase media reach and coverage. Horizon-scan the external environment to identify new opportunities, particularly in new media markets, to profile ODI’s work. Work with ODI research and communications colleagues to design and deliver proactive media plans for ODI outputs and activites (notably publications and events), including drafting press releases, developing key messages and pitching these to media. Develop compelling media content for both short news cycles as well as documentaries and feature pieces. React quickly to opportunities presented by external events and the rolling news agenda, including drafting and pitching ODI statements and organising media interviews with ODI experts and senior management, including the Executive Director. Provide advice, support and media training to colleagues, including researchers. Act as the first point of contact for incoming media enquiries, recording all relevant information, and liaising with relevant colleagues to deliver a timely and appropriate response. Occasional travel to developing countries with journalists to profile our research work. Work with communications colleagues to deliver media messages on a range of platforms, including multimedia (video, photography and audio). Work with the Communications Assistant to ensure accurate, up-to-date logging of all media coverage, providing statistics on coverage and uptake. Ensure that the media section of the ODI website, newsletters and other online channels are kept up-to-date.
Requirements: Extensive experience in a similar role with a focus on media and communications in international affairs or a related field in a busy, fast-paced environment. First-class track record of delivering impactful media coverage, both print and broadcast, supported by examples. Experience of drafting press releases, statements and other media content. Experience of translating complex and technical ideas into compelling content that will generate media high profile coverage. Experience of pitching content to multiple outlets, across print, broadcast and digital. Extensive knowledge of the media landscape, key media markets and publications for this field of work. Experience of managing relationships with a range of internal stakeholders, from different disciplines and backgrounds. Experience of building and managing relationships with media outlets and journalists. Good contact book of journalists, preferably in the field of international issues. Experience of organising and delivering media trips, preferably in developing countries. Wide-ranging knowledge of media markets and emerging trends, preferably in developing countries and regions as well as internationally. Knowledge of international affairs, international development or similar.
