Event – 16 May – Charity Concert for the Quartet of Peace, London | Charity concert for the Quartet of Peace, London
The Quartet of Peace is the name given to four handcrafted string instruments, each dedicated to one of South Africa's four Nobel Peace Laureates – Albert Luthuli, Desmond Tutu, FW de Klerk and Nelson Mandela. The instruments were made in Cape Town by master craftsman Brian Lisus.
On 16 May 2012, a charity concert will be held at the South Kensington home of Sir Vernon Ellis, a noted philanthropist and music-lover.
The internationally acclaimed Brodsky Quartet will be playing at this chamber concert, and they will be joined, for the principal item on the programme (Schubert Quintet), by the South African cellist Peter Martens. Also on the programme is a piece by the London-based South African composer Eugene Skeef. To reinforce the South African orientation of the evening, fine South African wines (mostly donated) will be served on arrival and at a buffet supper.
The Quartet of Peace project has two purposes. The first is to promote in South Africa the ideals of peace, reconciliation, mutual tolerance, freedom and hope, encapsulated in the lives of the four dedicatees. The vehicles for achieving this vision will include musical performance, directly or indirectly involving the Quartet instruments, locally and internationally. The second purpose is the provision of scholarships or other forms of financial assistance to young individuals from disadvantaged communities, who have exceptional talent in such fields as musical performance and instrument-making and repair.
Price: £50.00
