Introduction to ReConnect Africa

ReConnect Africa is an information portal and online magazine providing information about investment, careers and business in Africa. Through monthly feature articles, interviews and targeted online links, we provide information relevant to African professionals in the Diaspora and across Africa and for those looking to do business or seeking careers in Africa.

In addition to our monthly newsletter, we also occasionally send emails to our subscribers about events, services and/or other information that we believe is relevant and informative.

Personal Data and Privacy

In order for ReConnect Africa to contact our subscribers, we hold personal data in the form of the name and email address which relates to our subscribers, as well as other stakeholders and contacts. ReConnect Africa is committed to maintaining the appropriate confidentiality, integrity and security of this personal data by complying with both our legal and ethical obligations in respect of data protection and privacy. This policy sets out our principles relating to processing personal data and how we operate as data holders.

Type of Personal Data We Collect

Personal data is any information relating to an identifiable living individual. We collect the following information about individuals:

ReConnect Africa Subscribers

In order to communicate to our subscribers, ReConnect Africa maintains a database of subscribers comprising the following information which may contain personal data:

Personal/contact information: Names and email addresses

Other: any other information you choose to provide to us.

Website visitors

When any user visits our website, we may also automatically collect certain limited information through the use of cookies to distinguish that user from other users of our website. This helps us to provide a better experience when you browse our website and also allows us to improve our site.

Use of your Personal Data

ReConnect Africa Subscribers

We will use the contact details supplied by subscribers to email them our monthly newsletters and any other information we believe to be relevant and informative.

Subscribers can opt-out of receiving emails at any time using the ‘unsubscribe’ link provided on our newsletters or by contacting us at: editor@reconnectafrica.com.

Other Contacts

We use the contact details of individuals from related organisations, industry stakeholders and other contacts in the ordinary course of conducting our business in accordance with applicable law and regulations.

From time to time, we may contact non-subscribers and other contacts to invite them to specific events. We take care to only invite individuals to events that are relevant to, and likely to be of interest to those individuals. If you do not want us to contact you, please email editor@reconnectafrica.com at any time.

Sharing Your Personal Data

ReConnect Africa does not currently share your personal data with any third parties for their direct marketing purposes.

Service Providers and Suppliers

ReConnect Africa employs external IT support to provide support and development services in relation to our systems and databases and our IT team may from time to time need to access information which may contain personal data for the purposes of systems testing and development.

General

In rare circumstances, ReConnect Africa may need to share your personal data where necessary with other third parties (including regulatory authorities, courts and government agencies) to enable us to enforce our legal rights, or to protect the rights, property or safety of our employees or where such disclosure may be permitted or required by law.

We require third parties to maintain appropriate security to protect information from unauthorised access or processing.

Data Security

ReConnect Africa takes care to protect the personal data we store against accidental or unlawful destruction, loss, alteration or unauthorized disclosure or access and our database server is protected by industry standard firewalls and intrusion detection systems. In addition, we have encrypted the data and regular vulnerability scans are performed, both automatically and manually by our team.

Unfortunately, no data transmission over the Internet can be guaranteed to be 100% secure. As a result, although we strive to protect your personal data online, including through use of encryption and other measures, we cannot guarantee the security of any Internet communication or transmission.

Retention of Personal Data

We will only retain personal data for as long as is necessary to provide our services or for as long as is reasonably required for our lawful business purposes or to comply with a statutory or other legal requirement.

Data Breaches

In the event of any breach of ReConnect Africa systems impacting on the security of a subscriber’s or any other individual’s personal data, ReConnect Africa will inform the affected member(s) or individuals at the earliest opportunity.

GDPR

We have revamped our data privacy guidelines to ensure they are in line with GDPR and ensuring that our activities involving personal data will assess any impact on privacy in compliance with the GDPR.

From time to time we may change our data processing activities. We will notify you of any changes to this policy as required by law and post an updated version on our website.
