22 May – North-South Africa 2014 Corridor Event, Maputo, Mozambique

ImageThe North South Corridor - Facilitating intra-regional trade and development

Transport networks in sub-Sahara Africa are undergoing extensive works to ensure that they aid trade within the region. One such network is The North South Corridor, which is the busiest transport system in Southern Africa. It links the Zambian copper belts to Durban and Dar Es Salaam as well as the copper belt in the DRC to the same ports. 80% of cargo in along the North South Corridor road network is moved via the road networks and the remaining 10% is moved by rail. The corridor has been highlighted by the COMESA-EAC-SADC Tripartite as a priory infrastructure development project as the state of the roads is hindering trade and economic integration in the region. Due to this prioritization, the corridor is undergoing extensive works in Botswana, Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, to upgrade as well as build new roads and rail links along the corridor.

A Focus Day dedicated to The North South Corridor will form part of the Land Transport Mozambique 2014 conference.

What can you expect for 2014?

  • Keynote addresses from leaders in the industry
  • Information on how to accelerate projects
  • Insights into funding models regarding road and rail development
  • One on one meetings with top prospects and potential clients
  • A wide base of stakeholders from the African road and rail industry

4-5 June - Talent in Emerging & Growth Markets 2014, Sheraton Atakoy Hotel, Istanbul
Image

In recent years, economies in the West have struggled in the aftermath of the 2008 financial collapse. Yet, while the previously established economic powerhouses of the US and Western Europe have stalled, markets like the BRIC nations, Latin America, Africa and Asia Pacific have flourished.

Western companies have been all-too-aware of this, and have been seeking to capitalise on this economic success by making their own investments in people and infrastructure.

HR has naturally had to step up and play a leading role in creating an effective workforce, but the social and business culture can be very different to that which a Western company is used to. There can be huge differences in the skills and resources available in non-Western countries, and in order to be effective and productive, a company must be prepared for the training and development needs and make shrewd investments in order to ensure its workers have the knowledge and tools necessary for the job. Engagement is often said to be one of the highest priorities in the people-side of business, and in a market that is as unfamiliar as it is competitive, HR must be prepared with knowledge of local culture and the desires of its talented employees.

Talent in Emerging & Growth Markets 2014 brings together many global and regional leaders at both Western and non-Western companies, who have vast experience in addressing exactly these issues.

The presentations will give invaluable knowledge and effective strategies, both for people focussed on the region in question, and for those facing similar issues in other non-Western countries.

The event will see attendance of HR professionals and executives from all regions of the world, and presents an unrivalled networking opportunity, in the symbolic East-Meets-West location of Istanbul.

This is a unique and essential event for international HR, in 2014 more than ever before.

ImageThe UK’s largest, free African music festival Africa Oyé returns this summer and can unveil a globally acclaimed line up headed up by reggae / trip hop star Finley Quaye.

Africa Oyé, the UK's largest free celebration of African music and culture takes place annually in Liverpool. Beginning in 1992 as a series of small gigs in the city centre, the event has gone from strength to strength, moving to its present Sefton Park home in 2002 to cope with demand.

With too many negative representations of Africa entrenched in images of war, disease, poverty and famine, Oyé seeks to redress the balance and highlight the fantastic range of cultures, foods, music and artists that make this great continent one of the most vibrant and inspiring in the world.

The festival is also a truly international event that harnesses the spirit of multiculturalism and tolerance. It has played host to artists from nations right across Africa and also programmes music from South America and The Caribbean with Salsa, Soca and Reggae always a popular addition to the festivities.

But Africa Oyé is about more than music... Over 40 stalls selling the best food, drink, arts and crafts and fashion from Africa and beyond will again be present at the Oyé village along with long time supporter 'News From Nowhere', one of the UK's premier stockists of African music, with all the performing artists and much more on sale, it's a great opportunity to not only take in some of the best roots music around, but take some home with you too.
