Public debate surrounding the controversial Kony2012 campaign quickly moved beyond the challenges the LRA poses in Central Africa, to embrace wider questions of advocacy campaigning uses and abuses. Meanwhile the African Union is mobilizing a four-nation army to undertake a new offensive against the LRA – an initiative subject to controversy also, and the International Criminal Court continues to call for Kony's arrest.

At this event a panel of experts on the region will identify the policy options open to the international community and discuss the best way to remove the threat the LRA poses to the region.

The conference format consists of keynote speeches, panel debates, breakfast, lunch and a networking reception; and features high profile speakers from business, government, academia and civil society.

The theme for this year's conference is"Africa, Taking Ownership: Successes & Challenges". At the same time, we also seek to better understand the next set of challenges to overcome, to set new targets and to aspire to be more. We will explore this theme in four distinct but inter-related panel discussions. These are:

  • "African Trail-blazers: Exploring 21st Century Leadership" – Here, we attempt to appreciate the new face of leadership, by discussing examples of Africa's rising stars: the people who are leading positive change in Africa
  • "Trade not Aid: Growth through Economic Partnership" – We debate policy and diplomacy as levers of sustainable growth, and seek to understand Africa's burgeoning relationship with Asia
  • "African Innovation: Local Solutions for African Challenges"– We will explore innovative new business and social models that are proving to revolutionise lives on the African continent

The panel topics are tailored to foster a 360-degree perspective, and the panel speakers are being selected to ensure diversity of experience and conflicting views. Healthy debate is, after all, the lifeblood of progress! This year we hope to bring personalities including Acha Leke Partner & Director, McKinsey (Co-Author of "Lions on the Move")

22-24 May - Transforming the CFO, Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel, Johannesburg, South Africa

ImageRevolutionizing & Empowering Finance Professionals into becoming Change Agents, Business Partners & Value Integrators

TThe Need for CFO Transformation

In today's rapidly changing business climate the CFO's role has never been more important. Their management colleagues (including the board) desperately need fast, frequent feedback to make important decisions on a daily or weekly basis.

They are also demanding answers to difficult questions:

  • In which products, market segments and initiatives should we invest?
  • Which products and customers are strategic and profitable?
  • How can we reduce our costs without affecting customer value?
  • How are we performing today and how does our near-term future look like?

But CFOs are overwhelmed with detail and constantly buffeted by external

regulatory changes and have little time or energy to focus on improving their

performance management systems and being true partners in the business.

This workshop is aimed at existing and aspiring CFOs (including finance directors, controllers, managers, strategy and business planners and anyone responsible for improving the finance, planning and performance management operations) who want to improve their knowledge and performance to become true business partners and value integrators. It is applicable to people in both the private and public sectors.

To 4 November 2012 – Journeys and Kinship, Museum of London, London

ImageIs the face not currency enough? This display of face casts responds to the irony that members of the African Diaspora must pay to visit sites from which their ancestors were transported into enslavement.

Journeys and Kinship explores further the themes of the London, Sugar & Slavery gallery at the Museum of London Docklands through a project between the visual artist Jean Joseph and a group of young Londoners working together with Caribbean Calypso musician, Alexander D Great, and Yvonne Wilson from Equi-Vison.

The display features Joseph's work Sale Over Centuries, 2010 which consists of plaster face casts of 42 people from the African Diaspora who were born in and/or currently live in London. The casts promote discussion on the structure of faces and show how resemblances carry across generations and geographies.

In response to Joseph's work the young Londoners explored issues of enslavement, London's involvement and the African Diaspora. They then created a display which includes their own face casts and original music alongside film and photography documenting the project. This thought-provoking display raises issues around enslavement and life in modern London which remain relevant in today's capital.

Journeys and Kinship is open from 24 February – 4 November 2012 and is free entry.
