1 May – Macbeth, Greenwich Playhouse, London

Image Shakespeare’s famous tale about betrayal, desire and murder all fuelled by excessive ambition is set in Ancient Africa in this multi-media rendering of the classic tragedy.

CandyKing Productions and Celtic Kiss Productions are delighted to be returning to the Greenwich Playhouse to present Macbeth. Eamon McDonnell’s adaptation moves the action to the Ancient African civilization that was the Benin Empire –giving this famous tale an original and engaging twist. This production delivers, both visually and culturally, a very exciting performance, fusing the original violent tale with a new setting and context – bringing the vibrancy of Africa to the stage.

Macbeth is Shakespeare’s most dramatic tragedy – a brilliant combination of murder, spiritualism and violence – a play so brutal many believe it to be cursed. Macbeth is a frightening, heady mix of betrayal, desire and murder all fuelled by excessive ambition.

CandyKing and Celtic Kiss productions have staged four plays previously at the Greenwich Playhouse – all to excellent reviews and sell-out audiences. In this fifth production, they have joined together to create an exciting vision of a favourite classic.

Further assistance is available from the UK Algeria Business Council team in London. Full contact details are available in the website

www.uk-algeria.org.

Speakers will include:

  • His Exellency The Algerian Ambassador to the UK Mr Amar Abba (confirmed)
  • AbderrezZak Osmani, The UKABC Director General(confirmed)

  • Michael Parr, CEO BACB (tbc)
  • British Company present in the Algerian market (tba)
  • Mr. Nicholas Armour, Director IG1, UK Trade & Investment (confirmed)

Strengths of the Algerian Market

  • Strong economic fundamentals. Algeria has one of the highest GDP per capita income rates in Africa. Growth in 2010 is forecast to be 4.5%. Labour costs are low. Foreign currency reserves are around $150 billion. And the rate of inflation is one of the lowest in the region.
  • Algeria is the 4th largest crude oil producer in Africa and the 6th largest gas producer in the world. It is an increasingly important energy supplier for the EU – currently the 4th largest – and will increase its share as new distribution networks come on line.
  • Algeria is also blessed with many other natural resources such as gold, iron, zinc, uranium, copper, phosphate, tungsten and kaolin. And it has enormous potential for renewable energy, in particular solar, wind and tidal energy.
  • Algeria is a strategic hub for Europe, the Maghreb and sub-Saharan Africa. Algiers is only 2.5 hours away from the UK with at least one flight every day from London Heathrow. An East-West highway is being built to improve trans-Maghreb links and a trans-Saharan highway is planned.

Algeria is in the process of moving to a more diversified economy and the government has taken a number of measures to encourage this, for example by cutting corporation tax to 19% for certain sectors. The government has agreed a $150 billion 5-year spending programme, largely focused on infrastructure projects including housing, water supply, road & rail links and developing new port facilities. An initiative has been launched to promote technology start-ups linking Algerian companies with foreign entrepreneurs. And the government is keen to develop the tourism industry, introducing tax cuts and low-interest bank loans, reduced customs tariffs, subsidised land purchases and a streamlined bureaucracy.
