6 May – Rewind – A Cantata for Voice, Tape & Testimony, Southbank Centre, London

REwind - a Cantata for Voice, Tape & Testimony combines vocal soloists, chorus, and string octet with stunning projected images to celebrate the human spirit in South Africa that rose above the horror and evil of the deeds that were committed in the name of Apartheid.

Composer Philip Miller has endeavoured to express in music the South African spirit as it manifested itself during the Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings that began in East London, South Africa in 1996. The songs in REwind, which mix operatic and traditional South African styles, are built around actual testimonies and weave recorded audio samples from the hearings into the music. The physical environment, designed by Gerhard Marx, creates a visual context that illuminates the full power of the cantata. Through the use of ingeniously animated projections of photographs and text the testimonies literally take form, enveloping the chorus on stage. And as the words and images settle onto the everyday world, the spaces between the victim and transgressor, those who deliver testimony and those who listen, merge.

REwind is a work with no real parallel: both an extraordinary piece of music and digital art and a historical document with tremendous topical relevance. Above all, it is a commemoration of the dignity of those victims who suffered under the regime.

The OAA'83 Year Group, organisers and hosts of this year's OAA (UK) Annual Fundraising Dinner Dance are currently working very hard to make the event, on Saturday 8th May 2010, at Kensington Hall, a resounding fundraising success. 10-12 May – MINEPEC NIGER 2010, Niger Mining & Petroleum Conference & Exhibition, Niamey, Niger

"The Extractive Industries & Long Term Sustainable Development".

10-11 May - Rwanda Investment Forum 2010, Kigali, Rwanda

 

The Rwanda Investment Forum will be the first large scale investor event organised in the country since Rwanda became the 54th Member of the Commonwealth at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Trinidad last November. The Forum will be organised by the Commonwealth Business Council in partnership with the Rwanda Development Board and with the collaboration of the International Private Sector.

Two years ago the East African International Business Forum, the first event CBC had organised in the country, drew over 500 leaders from business and government, including 250 delegates from over 30 countries outside the East African region. This year's Forum aims to build on Rwanda's expanding network of relationships created by joining the Commonwealth, and its reputation for stability and good economic management. Its purpose is to enhance foreign direct investment by communicating national development goals and by bringing international investors and operators face-to-face with Rwandan project holders and entrepreneurs to discuss new economic and investment opportunities.

The forum will focus on business opportunities in the following sectors:

To 16 May 2010 - Chris Ofili Exhibition, Tate Britain, London

Chris Ofili's intensely coloured and intricately ornamented paintings are on show at Tate Britain in a major survey of the artist's career that brings together over 45 paintings, as well as pencil drawings and watercolours from the mid 1990s to today. One of the most acclaimed British painters of his generation, Ofili won the Turner Prize in 1998 and represented Great Britain at the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003.

Ofili has built an international reputation with his works that bridge the sacred and the profane, popular culture and beliefs. His exuberant paintings are renowned for their rich layering and inventive use of media, including balls of elephant dung that punctuate the canvas and support them at their base, as well as glitter, resin, map pins and magazine cut-outs.

Ofili's early works draw on a wide range of influences, from Zimbabwean cave painting to blaxploitation movies, fusing comic book heroes and icons of funk and hip-hop. For the first time, these celebrated paintings are presented alongside current developments in his practice following his move to Trinidad in 2005. May 2010 – South African Cinema, BFI Southbank, London

May celebrates films made post 1994 when a new society emerged, opening up opportunities for previously excluded black students to study film. Films include shorts and documentaries made in the last few years.

The BFI presents an overview of cinema during South Africa's apartheid era - some of the films are propaganda for the ideology and some are furiously opposed to it, while some are merely reflections of life at a particular time, in a particular country. Explore this confused wilderness of mirrors where race, gender, ideology, Puritanism, lust, guilt and revolt all have a part to play.

A two part season that presents films made both during and post South Africa's apartheid era that evidence the confused wilderness of mirrors where race, gender, ideology, etc. played a part.

11-14 May - The Christian Resources Exhibition 2010, Surrey UK

 

The Christian Resources Exhibition is now being the UK's biggest and most successful exhibition for equipping and resourcing Churches and Christian ministries.

The 5th eLearning Africa will take place from May 26th–28th, 2010 in Lusaka, Zambia, under the patronage of the Zambian Minister of Education, the Honourable Ms Dora Siliya. The pan-African conference, organised by ICWE GmbH, focuses on information and communication technologies (ICTs) for development, education and training in Africa. Serving as a pan-African platform, eLearning Africa links a network of decision makers from governments and administrations with universities, schools, governmental and private training providers, industry and important partners in development cooperation. Each year, a different country serves as the venue.

At the 2009 event, 1350 education professionals from 83 countries convened in the Senegalese capital Dakar in May. The conference took place under the patronage of Maître Abdoulaye Wade, the President of Senegal.
