3 December – FORWARD: Mobilising Young African Women in the UK

Image The aim of this event is to strengthen engagement and networking among young African women in the Diaspora on development and rights of African girls and young women. It will also increase awareness and develop critical leadership skills and voice. The event aims to provide a platform for sharing, engagement and discussion on strategies for action:

  • Raise awareness of the context and challenges facing girls and young women in Africa and the Diaspora in relation to gender equality, rights and identity
  • Develop leadership and media skills for enhancing engagement, advocacy action and mentoring
  • Provide a forum for celebrating young women leaders and entrepreneurs from the African Diaspora
  • Develop recommendations for establishing a network for Young African Women in the Diaspora to support this agenda for championing rights and gender equality.

ImageDue to the complex geopolitical nature of gas/LNG sourcing and long term nature of gas transactions between buyers and sellers, it is commercially prudent for those involved in this process to know the global gas/LNG supply situation, available techniques for price determination, contract negotiation and contract structure to be able to take appropriate action regarding these matters at present and provide safeguard for the future. Like their Christmas celebration, AMREF is no ordinary charity. It is the only international not-for-profit organisation run for Africans, by Africans. Founded 50 years ago as the Flying Doctors Society of East Africa, AMREF now works with the continent’s poorest and most marginalised communities to ensure they have the knowledge, skills and means to maintain their good health and break the cycle of poor health and poverty.

Among those participating in this year’s African Christmas Celebration are ACDarts – an inspirational African choir dedicated to teaching people of all ages about African art forms; Jumoké Fashola - radio broadcaster, jazz singer and AMREF maternal health ambassador; Kenyan born Mara Yamauchi – second fastest female British marathon runner ever and AMREF Ambassador; Angela Nguku – AMREF Maternal Newborn and Child Health expert and Founding Chair of the White Ribbon Alliance Kenya Chapter and Dr Noerine Kaleeba - Deputy Chair of the AMREF International Board and a globally recognised figure in the fight against HIV/Aids having pioneered a movement to address stigma and restore hope of families living with HIV/AIDS in Uganda.

After the event, the AMREF team will provide African Christmas hospitality (as well as the traditional mulled wine and mince pies!) All money raised from this event will support AMREF’s work bringing better health to African communities.

8 December - Inaugural Convergence Africa Conference, Nairobi, Kenya

Image Convergence Africa is a high-profile one-day conference, headlined by globally-renowned champions of entrepreneurs Sir Richard Branson, Founder of the Virgin Group; and Tony O. Elumelu MFR, former Group CEO of United Bank for Africa, Chairman of Heirs Holdings Group and Founder of The Tony Elumelu Foundation. 9 December - The role of the Diaspora in promoting healthcare in Africa, London

The Royal African Society cordially invites you to a one-day conference aimed at exploring the role of the African Diaspora in promoting healthcare in Africa and how this can be strengthened. The conference aims to:

  1. Provide a forum for the African Diaspora to voice their experiences and views of the African healthcare sector and the role they can play in supporting it.
  2. Critically discuss case studies of African Diaspora engagement in the African healthcare sector, focusing on volunteer returnees and private contributions to healthcare and exploring lessons learnt for similar future initiatives.
  3. Consider the policy and institutional environment required to support Diaspora engagement with the African healthcare sector, with the intention of identifying issues for future advocacy.

The findings and recommendations derived from the conference will be delivered to the appropriate ministers and government departments, with a view to impacting on policy change. Africa-UK is part of the Common Ground Initiative in association with the Royal African Society and AFFORD (African Foundation for Development). The Common Ground Initiative is an exciting programme with a £40 million fund supporting African development through UK-based small and Diaspora organisations. It is funded by Comic Relief.

The GPA is a Professional Development Organisation committed to promoting and showcasing excellence in Ghanaians and Africans by providing a national & International platform to identify mentors, positive role models and leaders through the development of professional, leadership and entrepreneurial talent.

This year there are 24 awards for grabs in various professions. In addition to achieving excellence in profession or business, the judges will also consider nominees social responsibility and how they affect the communities in which they operate.

This year, the GPA is encouraging participation from more young people and women. They have thus introduced 4 new categories for young people in Ghana. These are the Young Professional, The Young Entrepreneur, Young creative Star Award and The GPA Business Class: targeting Young people with start-ups. These categories have a percentage of the judging from voting.

29 December - Ugandan Social Networking Event, Kampala, Uganda

This year, the Uganda Investment Authority [UIA] and The Diaspora Unit, Ministry of Foreign Affairs[MOF] together with the Ugandans in the Diaspora, will be joining hands to introduce the first ever Ugandan Diaspora Social Networking Event. The Diaspora Social Networking Event seeks, among others, to help encourage the Ugandan expatriate workforce living in the Diaspora to return and above all to celebrate their success by allowing these Ugandans to give back through their talents, ideas and expertise to their motherland.

We intend to celebrate those Ugandans that have excelled in their various fields of work abroad. These include Academicians, Diplomats, Law Enforcement Agents, Doctors, Nurses, Soldiers, Flight Directors, Sports Personalities, Models, Designers, Musicians and Journalists.

As we celebrate these high achievers and Ugandan ambassadors in the Diaspora that have made our nation proud and allowed it to stand out on the international stage, we shall also be inspiring our younger generation to succeed and attain even greater dreams.
