2-3 December - mHealth Africa Summit, Accra, Ghana

Mobile Health Africa Summit is the first and only event focusing on Africa. It is an opportunity for all stakeholders to come together and channel key implementation of mhealth deployment in Africa. With reported mobile subscriptions in Africa to be over 379M, it is the precise time to put more focus on the growth of mhealth in Africa .Since mobile technology is probably the fastest and most cost effective way to access the rural areas in terms of healthcare delivery, the summit poses a great opportunity to discuss and learn more about the future of mhealth in Africa.

The mission of the mHealth Africa Summit is to explore the use of mobile technologies to improve public health, particularly in the underserved populations, health research, training with education applications and delivery systems, in Africa. It is an opportunity to bring together interested parties around the world working in the health care field to exchange ideas, to discuss innovative and emerging solutions and to develop collaborations in Africa.

The mHealth Africa Summit would explore the existing use of mobile communications health tools across the continent and elsewhere, and enhance the application of such tools to address the health challenges in Africa. M-health covers a wide range of potential applications of mobile telephony to health care such as in Surveillance, Information, Consultation, Diagnosis, Monitoring, Education and Training.

Our vision is that this conference will engage telecommunication companies, software developers, providers, financiers and other stakeholders of m-health in expanding mobile health applications; thereby enabling the delivery of healthcare to the farthest reaches of wireless networks in Africa.

The two day summit will have case studies from African countries where there have been deployment of mhealth, challenges and further opportunities will be areas to share experience.

2 December - The Case for Business in Developing Economies Book Launch, Chatham House, London

Ann Bernstein, Head, Centre for Development and Enterprise, will argue that the debate about business 'responsibility' and corporate involvement in development is distorted with few voices from developing countries being heard and the positive contribution of 'just doing business' almost completely unacknowledged.

In her book, The Case for Business in Developing Economies (Penguin 2010) Ann Bernstein argues that a new approach and a new discourse are required to cut through an increasingly flawed debate with potentially dangerous consequences for the poor.

23-23 February – Low Carbon Future Conference, Johannesburg, South Africa

Omega is organising the Low Carbon Future Conference on 23 & 24 February 2011 in Johannesburg.

Creating a low-carbon future is a global goal to which all international organizations and almost all countries in the world are committed. South Africa is no exception. In fact, our target for reducing carbon emissions is very high by international standards.

Against this background, the Government's announcement and release on 8 October of its Draft Integrated Resource Plan is of profound importance. The IRP is the foundation for a new energy capacity plan which will significantly influence every aspect of our society. How it is to be implemented and the coordinated strategies which need to be followed is what this conference is about. It involves not just policy-makers at national and local level but all forms of energy generation – both now and in the future.

The Low Carbon Future Conference will bring together decision makers and participants from government, power generators, utilities, municipalities, large energy users, investors and developers.

15-16 December Mobile Remittance, West Africa 2010, Lagos, Nigeria

MobileMoneyAfrica cordially invite you to attend "Mobile Remittance, West Africa", our First Money Money remittance Conference to be held in the Victoria Crown Plaza Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria.

The field of money transfer and remittances continues to change year by year. New actors in the market, new technologies, changes in regulations and ever more exacting compliance challenges demand that we offer a varied and dynamic agenda. We are very excited about the new subjects we will be examining in a region of more than 120 Million mobile subscriptions and 15 Billion USD in annual remittances.

African workers send home more than US$40 billion to the Continent each year but restrictive laws and costly fees hamper the power of remittances to lift people out of poverty, according to a new report by the UN's rural poverty agency, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

At the G8 summit in L'Aquila in July 2009, world leaders recognized the development impact of remittance flows and set a goal of reducing the cost of remittances by 50 per cent over the next five years, by promoting a competitive environment and removing barriers. Between 30 and 40 per cent of all remittances to Africa are destined to rural areas where many recipients have to travel great distances to collect their cash.

The conference agenda will cover the following focus areas:

New channel of remittances distribution.
Enhancing financial inclusion through remittances in West Africa.
Harmonizing Mobile Money Regulations in West Africa.
Managing Cross border Agent Networks.
Exploring regional opportunities with Financial institutions, MNO's and Money Transfers operators.
Positioning the Postal service in the emerging mobile Remittance Market.
