Job Summary: The Communications Manager will be responsible for managing a co-ordinated approach to the RAS’ communications and marketing activity across the organisation’s different programmes and projects. In charge of the digital infrastructure across RAS, s/he will be responsible for the implementation of the ‘Go Digital’ cross-cutting theme of the current Strategic Development Plan 2016-2020. This strategic goal aims to raise the overall profile of the RAS, projecting a positive and consistent message to the world, and includes two main projects: the re-development of the RAS site and the implementation of the Salesforce CRM system. In addition, the Communications Manager will also have responsibility for the content management and continued development of What’s on Africa. The Communications Manager will report to the Head of Programmes, Partnerships & Operations.
Job Description: Main Responsibilities Communications & Marketing · Work collaboratively with Design Agency D237 on the redevelopment of the RAS site · Manage relationship with RAS website hosting companies and digital support services · Assist in the production of the annual report in time for the AGM in June 2017 · Work with HoPPOs to develop a marketing strategy & timeline for the year · Produce RAS marketing material, including print, online, audio & video content · Write & edit engaging content for the RAS website and its various social media channels · Co-ordinate the effective use of newsletters to promote RAS across all its programmes · Write press releases for specific events and secure media coverage of RAS activities · Work with Events Programme Manager to promote the RAS’ public events programme · Support the development and implementation of marketing strategies for both Africa Writes and Film Africa & maintain year-round engagement on social media Customer Relationship Management (CRM) · Manage Salesforce as the central database of RAS members, experts & contacts · Manage relevant Salesforce data including Press, Marketing & Advertising contacts · Manage the relationship with chosen CRM support company What’s On Africa · Manage the maintenance of regular event listings on What’s On Africa · Manage and develop advertising partnerships through What’s On Africa · Manage relationships with regular contributors for What’s On Africa · Develop content for the What’s On Africa blog on relevant topics Financial Management, Fundraising & Partnerships · Manage the annual Communications and Marketing budget · Support fundraising efforts for programmes and activities across the RAS · Develop new partnerships to enhance the influence and reputation of the RAS · Manage and develop relationships with advertising partners & other organisations
Requirements: Person Specification - the following are all essential requirements: Skills & Abilities Excellent and versatile communication, relationship-building and interpersonal skills Excellent writing skills with ability to produce good, creative copy to deadlines Excellent organisational and project management skills Ability to work independently and as part of a small, collaborative team Ability to undertake research, process technical information & strong attention to detail Personal Attributes Entrepreneurial spirit and creative approach Confident networker and social media user Interest in African issues and the work of the Royal African Society Commitment to the values and ethos of the Royal African Society Experience Experience of content management systems, particularly Wordpress Experience of Salesforce as a Customer Relationship Management system Experience of creating social media and marketing strategies Experience of using email marketing and social media platforms (Mailchimp, Hootsuite or similar) Experience of design programmes (Photoshop, InDesign)
Salary: £28-30,000
