15 January - Eritrea's External Relations: Understanding its regional Role and Foreign Policy Book Launch, London

Dr. Richard Reid, Department of History, School of Oriental and African Studies. Frequently misunderstood, and too often underestimated, Eritrea is crucial to the stability of the Horn of Africa region and beyond. Despite early optimism after the country gained its independence in 1993, today it has an undemocratic power structure, a low level of socio economic development and a highly militarized political system. It has fought wars with each of its neighbours, including a particularly devastating war with Ethiopia which remains unresolved. As Eritrea faces the threat of sanctions, and the possibility of being listed by the United States as a state sponsor of terror, its future hangs in the balance - and with it the future of a trouble region that occupies an increasingly strategic position in world affairs. At this launch event the editor of this volume, Dr. Richard Reid, will discuss the findings of the book and the importance of Eritrea for international policy-makers.

Entry to these expert meetings is restricted. Experts and interested individuals should apply via the email address below. Only receipt of a confirmation email from Chatham House allows entry to meetings. Places are limited & Chatham House reserves the right to restrict access to any of its meetings without notice or explanation. Attendees may be required to present photo identification at any time. 26-28 January - South African Coal Exports Conference 2010, Cape Town, South Africa

South African coals remain the dominant force in supply for the European power markets. But where does South Africas future lie? At present European demand has fallen for steam coal and may not return until the second quarter of 2010. The question is, will the European buyers find the availability in tonnage they require when the demand does return?

The competition for tonnage is increasing. Rising thermal coal demand from India has seen a rise in exports from 8.5mt in 2008 to an estimated 18mt by the end of 2009. Domestic power demand in South Africa is forecast to grow year-on-year. Production from planned power plants in Sub Sahara will not come online in time to meet this demand, therefore putting additional pressure on Eskom to manage its resources and maintenance programme.
