7-9 November – 22nd Wharton Africa Business Forum, Philadelphia, USA

ImageTHE INFLECTION POINT: What is Africa's Onward Growth Model?

Africa is at an inflection point – a unique point in its history. The continent unlocked its potential and experienced rapid growth over the past decade. However, Africa’s nascent growth is increasingly threatened by continued sociopolitical instability, a persistent deficit in infrastructure, low quality human capital and most recently, rising terrorism.

It is critical that African governments and the private sector make the right decisions to sustain its promising growth. But what are these decisions? Which growth model should governments promote for Africa – a similar low cost manufacturing model used by East Asia, an agriculture-based model similar to Latin America or is there a clear, unique “African” model? Furthermore, can Africa disrupt existing industries by taking advantage of new technologies to leapfrog previously required growth stages?

The 22nd Wharton Africa Business Forum will explore, in detail, the different paths Africa could take. The goal of this year’s conference is to help every participant reach their own inflection point – what new idea, technology and innovations we all can bring to the continent to help her prosper.

9-12 November – 58th Annual IPM Convention, Sun City, South Africa

ImageThe 2014 IPM Annual Convention is premised on the following essentials as outlined in the McKinsey Quarterly and other research–based sources.

Today’s organisations:

  • Face challengesranging from dealing with the next phase of globalisation to disruptive technological change and continued macro-economic uncertainty
    Need to understand that context is a critical componentthat impacts how we do business;
  • Realise identifying key leadership qualitiesis a key strategic imperative that impacts organisational success;
  • Should be able to position HR and lead organisations successfully in the present day volatile, globalised, and hyper-connected age; and
    Appreciate the need to develop organisational resiliencein a world where global emergencies seem to erupt at ever short intervals

In his book, “Great by Choice”, Jim Collins notes that some companies and leaders navigate this type of world exceptionally well. This is what the 2014 IPM Annual Convention aims to achieve. Research has shown that greatness is achievable in organisations where HR leads courageously - hence the choice of this year’s theme.

At this year’s IPM Annual Convention, you will be exposed to winning strategies in Human Capital leadership and organisational effectiveness. Experience the intimacy of truly interactive sessions, both in the plenary and breakaway sessions.

The 2014 IPM Annual Convention will run from the 9th – 12th November at Sun City, North West Province, South Africa and registrations are now open. To register, call Patricia Ramokgadi and Lavern Meyers at 011 716 7504/03

10-13 November - AfricaCom 2014, Cape Town, South Africa

ImageDigital music continues to be a hotbed of discussion around its potential to be a viable long-term business. To be a business, it needs to have the potential for profitability and then to sustain it. But while access to broadband and cheap data rates continues to drive the discussion and restrict the roll out, other self-limiting factors are also influencing the growth of a theoretically lucrative economic sector.

Firstly, the industry needs to decide what it is, who does what and how it can service all stakeholder optimally. Are Network operators now music labels? Are digital music service providers the new record companies of old or are the artists themselves taking charge of their distribution and revenue earnings? Who actually controls the pie and is there enough of it to go around?

All these questions and more will be discussed at AfricaCom 2014’s Digital Music conference taking place in Cape Town from 10 – 13 November 2014.

With all eyes on Africa as a growing economic powerhouse, and with one the world’s largest and most established digital music offerings, Spotify, on track to enter the market before the end of 2014, is Africa finally getting its groove on?

To find out, register for AfricaCom 2014 or let us have your comments and thoughts as to who you think should ‘control’ the industry and how you see the industry shaping up.
