30 March – ‘Fezeka’s Voice’ Special Fundraising Screening, London

There will be a special fundraising screening of ‘Fezeka’s Voice’ on Tuesday 30 March to support the Fezeka Project. This film is about the inspirational and true story of a South African township school choir. Both the film and the choir have won awards in South Africa. The producers are using the film to inspire other kids to change their lives the way the kids in the choir have, and also to bring the choir back to the UK for an incredible tour. The tour will start and finish at the Southbank Centre, taking in Wales Millennium Centre and the Henley Festival (where the choir will sing alongside Bryn Terfel) amongst others, with the final performance on the same day as the World Cup Final.

The producers urgently need to raise the balance of money needed to bring the choir over and need the support of Africans and friends of Africa. The film is at 6:30 for 7:00pm on 30 March at the Moving Picture Company, 127 Wardour St, London. Our aim is to raise at least £10,000 for the school from this event.

9 March – Song East, Hackney Empire, London

Image Song East presents three exceptional singers who will tour for the EAST festival - Alasdair Roberts, Anni Rossi and Muntu Valdo will be performing FREE at Hackney Empire's Marie Lloyd Bar. You can't book - so get here early.

Muntu Valdo's music is rooted in the blues, mixing African traditions (he was brought up in Cameroon and then France) with striking modernity and technical mastery, building up layers of sounds with loops and samples. He toured last autumn with Congolese superstars Staff Benda Bilili - his debut album Gods & Devils was described by NME as 'a rapturous record that shudders with joy and passion.'

Folk visionary Alasdair Roberts' welcoming psychedelia weaves together myths and legends with swirling song structures and cryptic word play, cultivating moods both beautiful and haunting. This is the new folk, and Roberts' distinct niche landed him on the flawlessly innovative Drag City label. 'Roberts fashions his songs from the stout timber of myth, and creates songs that, for all their haunting morbidity, throb with electricity,' Independent.

Chicago's Anni Rossi amalgamates a mean juxtaposition between her delightful, hypnotic vocals and the destructive plucking of her divining rod of choice – the viola. After a little critical lauding of her previous two albums and supporting gigs with Camera Obscura, Noah & The Whale, and Electrelane, Rossi is ready to unveil her ultimate statement with Heavy Meadow, out on 4AD this spring.

10-12 May – Global Learning Academy 2010, Johannesburg, South Africa
Image

In tough economic times, organisations will look to their learning and development departments to contribute real value in building and retaining talent in the workforce. L&D departments need to respond to this challenge by adopting new approaches and developing new skill sets themselves. Also, the wide loss of jobs during the previous year has forced people to 'reinvent' & 'redefine' their professional capability. They are constantly looking for new skills or polishing existing skills to increase their competency and to make themselves more marketable. Hence, it is of utmost importance to global learning executives to provide a competent learning environment within the organisations.

The driving force behind SALVO Global Learning Academy 2010 conference is to help learning executives connect real-world corporate academy practices with leading-edge strategies to solve their current corporate learning challenges.

Global Learning Academy 2010 will showcase interactive and stimulating sessions, helping you to realize the need to restructure and revive your organisational learning & development functions post-crisis; providing tools and techniques to creatively blend working, learning and giving. GLA'10 is a unique platform to learn, network, discuss and debate fresh and innovative learning ideas with our esteemed faculty of speakers. Only the best speakers will be featured in this programme!

16-18 March – Fish and Marine Africa 2010

Image The continent's one and only Fishing Industry Exhibition and total Fish Show - Fish Africa - is undergoing a revamp after thirteen successful years as a standalone event.

As Organisers of both Fish Africa and Oil & Gas Africa (6 months later) it made no sense to continue running two completely separate events targeting virtually the same suppliers; splitting their budgets or making them choose one event over the other.

We have therefore decided to rename the event - Fish & Marine Africa as well as co-locate the exhibition alongside our 2010 Oil & Gas Africa expo at the Cape Town International Convention Centre in March next year. By introducing Maritime into the show title we want to emphasis that this event now does more than just serve the commercial Fishing Industries of Africa.
