2-4 July – FESPA Africa, Johannesburg, South Africa
Explore Digital Print Technology at FESPA Africa

The inaugural event will take place from 2-4 July 2014 at the Gallagher Convention Centre, Johannesburg, South Africa and incorporates the Sign Africa and Visual Communications Africa Expos, the region’s leading events for the sign industry.

ImageThe theme and strapline ‘Explore new technologies. Explore new opportunities’ was developed as a result of surveying the print and sign community about current industry challenges. It showed 71% of respondents are looking to expand the print applications in their company to appeal to new markets. A visit to FESPA Africa provides print, sign and visual communication professionals with the chance to investigate a range of applications and markets: textile print from soft signage to garments, signage from way-finding and LEDs to digital media, vinyl graphics from cars to windows. The opportunities are vast.

In addition to exploring the exhibitor solutions on the show floor, attendees can also take advantage of FESPA’s renowned educational content throughout the event that will provide coverage and insight on trends, market opportunity and best practice.

Professionals can find out more about FESPA Africa, supported by platinum sponsors Avery Dennison and Roland, and register for their free attendance online at www.fespaafrica.com.

2-4 July - Cape Industries Showcase Expo, Cape Town, South Africa

Image RAC 2014 is one component of the four-part Cape Industries Showcase Expo, taking place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 2 to 4 July 2014.
With the world’s population increasing exponentially, food security is increasingly under the spotlight. Raising agricultural production levels is subject to land availability and in any case would be a longer-term solution. Right now the easiest option is to find ways of reducing the 40% post-harvest losses experienced in many countries.
Strengthening the cold chain and providing efficient refrigeration systems would go a long way to alleviating these losses. A number of leading refrigeration companies aim to drastically drop temperatures in Africa at this year’s RAC Africa Expo, a component of the four-in-one Cape Industries Showcase (CIS).

21-22 July - Infrastructure Africa, Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg, South Africa
Image

The need for infrastructure development in emerging markets is critical. In most African countries, particularly the lower-income countries, infrastructure emerges as a major constraint on doing business. The cost of addressing Africa’s infrastructure needs is around $93 billion a year, according to the World Bank.

A third of this sum goes towards operation and maintenance, which is often omitted from the infrastructure development conversation. Unreliable power supply is a significant transaction cost for firms operating in the region, and they often resort to self-supply through the use of generators. Water supply, sanitation and transport similarly require substantial investment of an estimated US$ 40.1 billion collectively. The demands for infrastructure development in Africa, however, provide ample opportunity for business growth and business expansion across the continent.

21-24 July - Local Content Development in the Oil & Gas Industry, Johannesburg, South Africa
Image

Success in Local Content is all about effective, efficient, and productive collaboration among actors. Collaboration and sharing are not common attributes of successful oilmen or oil companies – though interestingly, oil producing countries have long struck a cooperative tone in the form of what economists term a cartel – namely, OPEC. Now, we are moving into an era of new entrants as technology advances and scarcity in known markets drives the industry to explore and then develop projects in new contexts. The “resource curse” has motivated civil society and citizens in these countries to strive to ensure they are able to realize economic benefits from their resource discoveries. All look to the success of other countries to guide their own entry into the oil and gas marketplace.

The problem: Mozambique is not much like Brazil beyond the language and the beautiful beaches; Sierra Leone can’t achieve in 3 years what it took Nigeria 50 years to achieve; Tanzania is different from Norway in a few key aspects relevant to developing a local supplier base.

This course is going to focus squarely on the need to tackle local content early. Doing so isn’t easy – and it requires collaboration. It will slow the realization of royalties and tax revenues. It will require IOC expertise and then cost-recovery from host governments in one form or another. The focus will instead be on the dynamics of the relationships between the various actors in an oil and gas value chain. We invite you to join with colleagues from diverse organizations, regions, roles, and cultures to explore they why’s and how’s of local content.
