9 January - Sudan and South Sudan: Reflecting on Ten Years of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, Chatham House, London

{mosimage}Sudan’s Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) was signed in January 2005, ending two decades of war between the National Congress Party (NCP) of the North and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement and Army (SPLM/A) of the South. Both the NCP and SPLM remain in power today, with South Sudan having achieved independence in 2011 after a referendum. But the legacy of the agreement, facilitated by regional and international mediators, is tainted by unresolved challenges, including the status of Abyei, continued conflict in Darfur, South Kordofan and Blue Nile and the final demarcation of the two countries’ boundaries.

This event will launch the new book South Sudan: A Slow Liberation by Eddie Thomas, published by Zed books. The event will examine the legacy of the CPA and the extent to which it laid the foundations for lasting peace. Panellists will explore options for progress in and between both countries.

19-20 January 2nd Africa Urban Infrastructure Investment Forum, Luanda, Angola
{mosimage}

There are over 50 cities with more than 1 million inhabitants in Africa. Angola has over 60% of its population living in urban areas. With this in mind, Angola will host the 2nd Africa Urban Infrastructure Investment Forum (AIIF) on the 19th and 20th January 2015. The event is spearheaded by the African Business magazine and IC Events, co-organised with the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG-A) and supported by the UN-Habitat.

According to the UN, the populations of some cities in the continent will increase by up to 50% by 2030. This is both an opportunity and a challenge. What is certain is that planning is needed to turn these cities into economic powerhouses, and make them fit for the 21st century. As part of the conference, the ministry of planning and urbanism will organize site visits to the country's "New Centralities” and field trips will be organised to the major urban and housing projects around the capital, Luanda. The capital is a great case study in post-conflict urban development and the Forum will discuss issues faced by African countries, mainly those who have suffered decades of conflict and civil war.

Angola began the slow but steady path to reform and rehabilitation when civil war came to an end in 2002. The Republic of Angola demonstrates the ability of African states to emerge from bloodshed and offer a secure and stable environment for reconstruction and development.

28-30 January – Powering Africa Summit, Washington DC, USA
{mosimage}

In June 2014, stakeholders from the US participated in the 16th annual Africa Energy Forum to explore the potential partnerships on the continent and increase Africa’s understanding of the opportunities available through partnerships with American partners.  Not only did this throw light on what America’s role can be in the continent, it also demonstrated how the Power Africa Initiative is  imperative in increasing sustainable investment and support for indigenous investors already playing a significant role in Africa energy sectors.

In August 2014, African heads of state and ministers gathered in Washington to start the process of capital-raising to support the objectives of the ‘Power Africa Initiative’, resulting in over US$20bln of capital being committed from American and African partners in the Initiative.

On the 28th January 2015, African stakeholders return to Washington to showcase power and energy infrastructure projects and partnership opportunities, making sure that the capital raised is invested in viable projects with both human and industrial capital being secured.

28-30 January – Rolling Forecasts, Planning and Budgeting Master Class, Johannesburg, South Africa
{mosimage}

Economist magazine reports that 80% of companies in the UK are unhappy with their planning and budgeting systems. Managers say that planning takes too long and costs too much. They say that traditional, once-a-year, fixed performance contract budgeting doesn’t work in today’s rapidly changing world.

In some organisations, key parts of the management system aren’t linked together: strategy, budgeting, forecasting, performance measurement, management reporting, incentive compensation and corporate governance, all take place in separate parts of the business, and are managed in functional silos.

For organizations operating in an environment of continuous change, traditional budgeting has become out of date.

Today, many senior management and line managers are turning to rolling forecasts to inspire and lead their organisations to superior performance.

Rolling forecasts offer greater visibility into future operating performance. Unlike budgets, they reflect the fact that operations don’t switch off at year-end. Making good business projections isn’t as hard as it sounds. Implemented correctly, rolling forecasting can be the single most valuable tool to identifying where changes need to be made in order to maximize profitability and minimize losses. Well-established forecasting techniques can take some of the guesswork out of operational decision making and put the focus back on optimizing profitability, rather than putting out fires.

27 February – 1 March - 17th annual Africa Business Conference, Harvard Business School, Boston, USA

{mosimage}The conference will continue the tradition of thought-provoking content and professional networking with inspirational people. This year, our goal is to facilitate a more practically useful experience for our attendees, and we are aiming to build on last year’s innovations to make this possible. We hope you will benefit from the new venture competition, interactive panel sessions, and a targeted networking lunch that will allow you to make connections that will be useful beyond the weekend.

This year’s theme "A More Inclusive Africa: the pursuit of progress for all" is one that is very meaningful to us. While the story of Africa's stellar growth has been amply celebrated in recent years, we believe opportunities to make it more inclusive and generate sustainable progress for all are the next chapter of Africa’s story.

We want to inspire conversations that drive actions, which ultimately lead to the type of far-reaching progress that we envision for Africa. We hope to celebrate Africa’s successes but also talk about the opportunities to conquer the challenges that exist. Some key questions that we will discuss include: ‘How can businesses promote and benefit from inclusive growth?’; ‘How should leaders across the private-public spectrum weigh the tradeoffs oftentimes involved in pursuing inclusive growth?’; ‘What types of leadership are needed to achieve this progress?’

Please note that individuals who are unable to attend can watch live feeds of the keynote speeches and potentially some panels.
